If you’ve ever fantasized about having your single-malt Scotch in tide-pod form, prepare to have your daydreams come true. Whisky maker Glenlivet has released “edible cocktail capsules made from seaweed,” and the Internet isn’t sure how to react. Should they be angry because something in pod packaging is supposed to be eaten? Or, should they be excited a sustainable way to package consumable products is being brought to the mainstream.
Whisky lovers can simply pop a pod into their mouths and enjoy one of three flavors: citrus, wood or spice. “No ice. No stirrer. No glass. We’re redefining how whisky can be enjoyed,” the Scottish distillery says in their promotional video, but are they real?
It certainly sounds like this is a real deal product. The seaweed casing comes from a partnership with a sustainable packaging start-up called Notpla and each edible capsules each contain 23 milliliters of whisky. Food and Wine says they were created especially for London Cocktail Week however hinted they could soon make their way to the US.
The Glenlivet, the original Speyside single malt, has partnered with sustainable packaging company Notpla and cocktail legend Alex Kratena, to unveil a ‘Capsule Collection’ of glassless cocktails that break convention and redefine the way whisky is traditionally enjoyed.
