Daytona Beach, FL – Daytona Beach Police officers say that 36-year-old Jessica Zacarro told them she did not know the baby was in her car after the vehicle was forced open to rescue the baby. She is charged with Child Neglect after police were called for the rescue at Twin Lakes Medical Center.
On Tuesday, November 5, a witness called for help at about 8:40 a.m. to say the little girl was strapped in a car seat without the engine running and all the windows rolled up. The outside temperature at the time was 80 degrees. She reported that the baby was crying loudly and that she tried to open the doors but was unsuccessful. The witness then called 9-1-1.
Paramedics responded quickly, forcing the doors open and pulling the child free from her seat. They checked the baby’s vitals and found her to be OK. She did have a soiled diaper and was a little dehydrated. She was also sweaty and clammy to the touch.
Zaccaro showed up shortly after the rescue, panicky and out-of-breath, according to the police report. She said she did not know the baby was in the car and that her husband had put the baby in the car seat without her knowledge. The report states that Zaccaro actively resisted by pulling her arms away when officers tried to take her into custody. After reading the suspect her Miranda Rights, she asked for a lawyer.
The Department of Children and Families was notified. DBPD is not disclosing the woman’s relationship to the child. The baby was released to the custody of family members. Zaccaro was taken to the Volusia County Jail but has already been released. She is out on a $2,500 bond.
