Hundreds of Garfield the cartoon cat phones keep washing up along a 15 mile stretch of a French beach each year. How they got there remains a maritime mystery – but the most likely explanation is that they fell from a container ship on their way to Europe from the US in the 1980s.
It’s not just a couple phones either, last year alone, 200 were recovered, some virtually undamaged, despite decades in the water. The phones were wildly popular in the 80s when the lasagna loving cat was in his heyday. Environmental group Ar Viltansou, says the phones could literally last forever given their state of conservation after more than 30 years in the water.
